Genre: Young Adult, Thriller, Mystery
Synopsis
In the tradition of I Know What You Did Last Summer and How to Get Away with Murder, five teens must overcome their paranoia in order to keep their teacher’s death a secret in this fast-paced suspense thriller.
Nothing ruins summer vacation like a secret…especially when it involves a dead teacher.
Ivy used to be on top of the social ladder, until her ex made that all go away. She has a chance to be Queen Bee again, but only if the rest of the group can keep quiet.
Tyler has always been a bad boy, but lately he’s been running low on second chances. There’s no way he’s going to lose everything because someone couldn’t keep their mouth shut.
Kinley wouldn’t describe herself as perfect, though everyone else would. But perfection comes at a price, and there is nothing she wouldn’t do to keep her perfect record—one that doesn’t include murder charges.
Mattie is only in town for the summer. He wasn’t looking to make friends, and he definitely wasn’t looking to be involved in a murder. He’s also not looking to be riddled with guilt for the rest of his life…but to prevent that he’ll have to turn them all in.
Cade couldn’t care less about the body, or about the pact to keep the secret. The only way to be innocent is for someone else to be found guilty. Now he just has to decide who that someone will be.
With the police hot on the case, they don’t have much time to figure out how to trust each other. But in order to take the lead, you have to be first in line…and that’s the quickest way to get stabbed in the back.
Q Which writers inspire you?
There are so many! My friends, Suzanne Young and Bethany Griffin, for starters, keep my head in the game, so to speak. They talk me through tough spots and are both talented, wonderful writers. I also admire J.K. Rowling (who doesn’t love Harry Potter?), Stephen King, Gail Carson Levine…the list is endless.
Q Tell us something about your main character?
Well, there’s not one—there are five! The chapters alternate between Ivy, Mattie, Kinley, Tyler, and Cade, and I love all of them. Because of the death of their teacher, the five are forced to interact in ways they never would have before the accident.
Q What are you working on at the moment?
I’m doing some work on SUCH A GOOD GIRL, which will be my third book with Simon Pulse. I’m so excited about it. One of the taglines we’re kind of working with is, “Even good girls do bad things,” but that may change!
Q Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from Secret, Lies & Scandals?
Oh, man, there are so many out there right now that would be great, and honestly, I’m not sure! Here’s a shot at one potential cast:
Ivy: Lily Collins
Mattie: Dylan O’Brien
Kinley: Aeriel Miranda
Tyler: Nicholas Hoult
Cade: Takayuki Yamada
Q When did you decide to become a writer?
It must have been Kindergarten when I fell in love with books and I decided I wanted to be a writer or a nail technician. As it turns out, I’m terrible at painting nails and my fingernails are always in awful shape, so I guess I ended up with being a writer. In all seriousness, I have always been an avid reader, and writing just seemed to pair naturally with my love of all things books.
What was the hardest thing about writing Secrets, Lies & Scandals? Occasionally, I would fixate on a certain scene or passage and write it over and over and over again. It was a struggle giving up control and sending it in to my editor.
